New Dean of Studies Appointed

The Board of Governors is delighted to announce the appointment of Gerard Grealish to the position of Dean of Studies / Deputy Principal of Cistercian College.

This appointment forms part of the realignment of senior roles within the College which is currently being implemented by the Board of Governors.  It follows the retirement in December 2009 of Dan Smyth who had been seconded from the position of Deputy Principal in 2005 to the office of President of the College.  Marcelline Cody, who has been Principal of the College since 2006, succeeded Dan Smyth as President in June 2010.  As President Mrs Cody retains the Department of Education position of Principal and will be assisted in her role as President by the Dean of Studies and the Dean of Residence.

Mr Grealish arrived in CCR in September 1994 as a teacher of Physics, Maths and Applied Maths.  Over the last sixteen years he has proved himself an effective teacher and valued member of the College staff.  As well as these subjects he has also taught Computer Science and Junior Cert Science, and supervised evening study for many years.

Originally from Co Galway, Mr Grealish graduated with a Science degree in Physics and Maths from University College Galway, where he also completed the Higher Diploma in Education.  In 2002 he was one of the first group of students to obtain the new Masters degree in Science Education at UCC.

More recently, during 2008 and 2009 Mr Grealish completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership in Maynooth University.  Again this was the first year that this course was held.  It was co-ordinated and delivered by a team from the LDS (Leadership Development in Schools) in conjunction with the Education Department and Maynooth University.

As Dean of Studies, Mr Grealish will have responsibility for education and learning in the College.  This entails overseeing the day-to-day class schedule, individual student progress and subject development.  It also involves ensuring the successful integration and continuity between the learning in the classroom during the day and the study done in the evenings.  Mr Grealish will be assisted by a Deputy Dean of Studies.

We congratulate Mr Grealish on his appointment and wish him many successful years as Dean of Studies.

Congratulations to David Keegan (6th Year) on his winning essay in this year’s Irish Austrian Society Essay Competition. He is the second winner in the senior category and has been awarded the Dr. Otto Glaser Perpetual Trophy for his essay on the role of smaller countries, such as Ireland and Austria, in the EU. David wrote a very creative essay in German in which Ireland and Austria had to justify their attendance at an EU presidential dinner in the face of criticism and skepticism from the larger EU countries, such as France and Germany.

David was  presented with the trophy by His Excellency, the Austrian Ambassador, Dr. Walter Hagg, at a ceremony at his residence on Tuesday 11th May.

Previous winners from CCR in the essay competition include Mark Boland, Thomas Hayes (twice) and Kevin Ryan.

Roscrea team take All-Ireland debating title!!

Pictured is the senior debating team from the Cistercian College, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary ( left to right ) Eiméad Ó Riain ,  Mícheál Ó Criomhthainn ( team captain ), Caoimhín Ó Riain    following their win at the All-Ireland Finals of Comórtas Díospóireachta an Phiarsaigh Gael Linn.  The event was held in the Gresham Hotel, Dublin, on Thursday last, 25 March 2010.  This national competition has been organized by Gael Linn since 1960,  and over 150 teams from secondary schools throughout the country took part this year.

Guest chairperson on the night, Fiach Mac Conghail, Director of the Abbey Theatre, conducted the proceedings with great aplomb.     A previous winner of the competition himself in 1980 with Coláiste Eoin, Dublin, he told the large gathering present  that participating in the competition all those years ago had, in no small measure, helped him in his career to date.

In the senior section of the competition, the young orators spoke knowledgeably on the topical motion ‘Tá cúis ghearáin ag oibrithe na hearnála poiblí!’  ( Public sector workers have reason to complain ! )  and many interesting arguments were put forward by each speaker.     There were cheers of delight from their supporters when it was announced that the Cistercian College students were the 2010 All-Ireland Champions !  They won out over teams from  Presentation College, Cork; St. Michael’s Loreto, Navan, Co. Meath and Alexandra College, Dublin.  Teacher,

Nicola Ní Bhraonáin, who has helped and directed the team on the road to success since November last, was justifiably proud of her students. She herself captained a team to victory in the 1999 final of this prestigious competition while a pupil in the Presentation Secondary School, Loughboy, Kilkenny!
